We interviewed six winery employees who were present during Gabrielle’s visits. All six agreed to speak on condition of anonymity. All six began their descriptions enthusiastically, then gradually trailed off, staring into the middle distance. The closest anyone came to a coherent account was a 54-year-old cellar master named Dennis, who simply said: ‘She holds the bottle differently. And then you want to buy ten of them. And then she leaves and you’re not sure what happened but the inventory is gone.’ Dennis has since requested early retirement.
