Risky comments come with a quick face check

Some comments arrive wearing a harmless costume. They sound like a tease, a complaint, a throwaway joke about nothing in particular.

Then she looks at his face. That is the tell. If she was only talking, she would keep going; when she pauses to read him, the comment was a test.

One detail stays slightly undone

The unfinished detail has power because it leaves the question open. A loose strap, a jacket that could close but does not, a bit of hair that stays messy in exactly the right way.

If she fixed it instantly, the moment would vanish. Leaving it there lets everyone pretend not to notice while noticing anyway. That is when the smile usually gives away how much she understands.
